Planted in 1991, the 50-acre Hawks View Vineyard offers ideal growing conditions for Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay. The southeast-facing slopes protect the vines from the heat of the summer, while the moderate elevations ensure optimal ripening.

Laurelwood District AVA
Hawks View Winery is situated in the Laurelwood District, the newest federally approved American Viticultural Area (AVA). Nestled within the Chehalem Mountains in the northern end of the Willamette Valley, the AVA is notable for its distinctive Laurelwood soils, which produce remarkable fruit.
Laurelwood Soil
Laurelwood soil is made up of loess (an established soil type made up of windblown silty loam) and the underlying volcanic/Jory sub-soil. Hawks View is 100% Laurelwood, composed of 23 different blocks that are planted on different clone/rootstock combinations at different elevations and orientations (though the vineyard’s aspect is roughly southeasterly). Our soil provides a unique flavor profile for Pinot noir grapes grown here.
"The oldest vines on the vineyard from the 80's plantings have a concentrated floral aroma. Rose petal to a very intense hibiscus seem to emerge from these older Pinot noir blocks as the vintages unfold. For some of the younger Dijon clone blocks, the effect of the terroir is more subtle. The bolder, concentrated blue and black fruit of the clones seems to veil the pretty red fruit qualities that the Laurelwood soils provide in the most expressive vintages. However, in the cooler vintages (like 2019), the floral elements of the estate's Laurelwood soils added complexity to the darker fruit of the clones, and created a very complex mélange in our most precocious blocks (16 and 17).
Often in the past, I used to call the wines produced from Laurelwood soil 'pretty' or 'delicate,' but after a few years at the Hawks View estate I know better. The best way to sum this vineyard and even this new AVA's effect on the enigmatic Pinot noir grape vine is to say that these soils produce Pinot Noir wines that are as exciting as any in the North Willamette Valley, but with a delicious floral complexity and linear backbone unmatched anywhere else except right here in our neighborhood."
