Vineyard Notes
Planted in 1991, the 50-acre Hawks View Vineyard offers the ideal growing conditions for Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. The eastern-facing slope and Laurelwood soils, combined with dry farming and hand harvesting, allow for wines of great character and distinction.
Production Notes
The 2017 vintage began cold and rainy during flowering in our estate blocks. This rain reduced the size and number of clusters at fruit set. The reliably dry summer months finished with heat extremes in August that shut the vines down once temperatures rose above 90 degrees and caused some grape dehydration. Harvest however began under ideal conditions in late September with grapes for Sparkling Rose, White Pinot, and the Pinot gris, followed by receiving Pinot noir for red wine production over the next two weeks. The end of October saw the last fruit of the season at perfect ripeness. In the cellar as the Pinot noirs emerged from fermentation, bright cherry and floral notes were prevalent from the older blocks and intense blackberry notes from the younger Dijon clones.
Winemaker Notes
"This Pinot Noir is made from Dijon Clones from Block 16 & 17 of our 50 acre estate which produced a dark, fruit forward wine. We used 30% whole cluster & 70% destemmed Pinot Noir grapes that were pressed off early and resulted in a wine with gentle, soft tannins. The 2017 Barrel Select Pinot Noir is ready to drink now or by 2023 will have full flavor profile integration. The nose of this Pinot is rather complex. The cherry and hibiscus are intensified by a cola, sandalwood, and mushroom aromas. The wine changes in the glass within minutes of pouring as fresh turned earth, smoked bacon, and cranberry emerge in turns. The mixed berry fruit becomes quite linear after a moment on the tongue promising a fine, long life in your cellar. The wine is lithe, rich, and full of surprises; you will not be disappointed if you pull the cork right now." - Winemaker, Don Crank III
