The Chehalem Mountains American Viticultural Area (AVA) that Hawks View Vineyard calls home is perhaps the most diverse of all the sub-AVA’s of the Willamette Valley.  In fact, the Chehalem Mountains contain examples of all the soil types found in the greater Willamette Valley in one cozy viticultural area (sometimes in the same vineyard!) It is, and will become even more in coming years, the most sub-divided of the AVA’s of the Willamette Valley with good reason.  The Parrett Mountain Jory soils grow very different Pinot Noir than the Willakenzie soils of the Ribbon Ridge, which are in turn are very different than the Laruelwood soils of our own Hawks View Vineyard.

The class offered this February by Veteran Oregon Pinot Noir winemaker Don Crank will guide guests to explore the distinct differences of Pinot Noir from the diverse Chehalem Mountains terroir.  Wines will be tasted from the existing and newly proposed sub AVA’s (Laurelwood and Ribbon Ridge,) the Parret Mountian, as well as vineyard and block selections from the complex “collapsed hillside,” mixed soil vineyards above North Valley road north of Newberg.  Please join us to taste Oregon Pinot Noir wine in all its splendid variation as contemplated through the microcosm of the vineyard sites of the Chehalem Mountains.
